Outdoor Activities San Diego Style
Summertime is here in “America’s Finest City”, and that means one thing for residents and visitors alike: it’s time to get out and soak up some golden sunshine! The metro is truly at its finest during the summer months, with attractions, events and our famous shoreline all providing an endless amount of amazing things to do while you’re out. In (sun)light of that, here are our suggestions for some fantastic ways to enjoy the best outdoor activities San Diego has to offer.
Explore La Jolla’s Tide Pools

One of the more interesting features of this area is our abundance of tide pools — small elevated reservoirs of inland ocean water that retain their depth even after the tide goes out in the evenings. La Jolla in particular is home to some of the best tide pools in the region. When you visit these unique natural features, you’re also in for spectacular sunsets, amazing photo opportunities, and an experience you can’t have anywhere else.

Catch a Live Performance

In the mood for some entertainment? The San Diego County Fair has a star-studded lineup of performances this year, including music, stand-up comedy and more. Our sister hotel Humphreys Half Moon Inn is hosting a full schedule of household-name acts during the summer season of Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. And the newly opened Rady Shell at Jacobs Park has an absolute wealth of world-class shows, as well
Ride The Emperor at SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld has delighted generations of visitors with its entertaining and educational up-close marine-life exhibits of playful seals, orcas, dolphins, and more. But the world-famous aquarium has a few summer surprises in store for thrill-seekers. The Emperor at SeaWorld is California’s tallest, fastest and lightest dive roller coaster, and sends guests on a 90°, 60-mph tear through loops, twists and hair-raising hairpin turns.

Head Out on a Hike

Hiking has grown in popularity in recent years, and for good reason — it’s not just a great way to enjoy the outdoors, it’s fantastic exercise. Our corner of southern California is absolutely loaded with incredible treks, from the gentle slopes of Fortuna Mountain Trail, to the panoramic views of Cowles Mountain, to the sweeping sandstone cliffs, ocean views and botanical wonders of Torrey Pines Preserve. And remember: Temperatures during summer in San Diego can get pretty toasty — so always remember to hydrate, and bring along plenty of sunscreen.
Hoist a Frosty Brew
San Diego County is home to more than 150 breweries, brewpubs, and tasting rooms — the most of any county in the nation. So we’ve more than earned the appellation of “The Craft Beer Capital of America.” And since beer never tastes better than in summer, why not hit up some of our local breweries? North Park Beer Company, Kilowatt Brewing, Mikkeller Brewing Company and Hillcrest Brewing Company are great places to start. Need more suggestions? Check out our blog on other great local breweries.

The San Diego Padres have called “America’s Finest City” home for more than 50 seasons. Summer is prime baseball time, so a day spent at Petco Park taking in a little of America’s favorite pastime is always a great way to enjoy the weather. So snag your seat, grab a beer and a Barrio Dogg, and watch the hometown heroes slug it out on the diamond.
Have a “Super” Day

San Diego Comic-Con — the world’s biggest all-ages convention of comics culture — returns to the San Diego Convention Center in summer from July 21–24th. Comic-Con is a massive event that draws more than 135,000 attendees every year to celebrate the impact that all things superhero, sci-fi, fantasy, and magic have had on our collective consciousness. Elaborate costumes, board-game tournaments, video games, panel discussions, writers, artists, meet-and-greets, and comics galore will greet visitors.

Fantastic Fireworks
(Photo: @bigbayboom)
What’s Independence Day without some sky-rotechnics? The Big Bay Boom is the most beloved fireworks show on the west coast, with four barges’ worth of “ooh” and “aah”-worthy explosions lighting up the night sky. The display is easily enjoyable from all over the city. But if you want a front-row seat? Grab a blanket or lawn chair and head to Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero, Marina District, or Coronado Ferry Landing.
